The Universidade Aberta ( Portuguese for "Open University") is a state distance university in Lisbon .
history
In 1983 the Ministry of Education decided to set up a state-sponsored distance university. The seat of the Palácio Bramão was determined, a city palace built in 1760 in the municipality of São Mamede . In 1988 the Universidade Aberta was founded.
Structure and activities
The university is divided into four superordinate departments:
- Science and Technology ( Departamento de Ciências e Tecnologia )
- Social Sciences and Administration ( Departamento de Ciências Sociais e de Gestão )
- Pedagogy and distance learning ( Departamento de Educação e Ensino à Distância )
- Human sciences ( Departamento de Humanidades , with courses in history, language and culture, among others)
There is also a superordinate institute for research, a department for lifelong learning , a department for the local institutions of the distance university, and the administration.
In addition to its headquarters in Lisbon, it also has two regional offices in Porto and Coimbra. There are also 16 local study centers in Portugal and one in Mozambique.
She cooperates with over 400 international universities, Portuguese institutions and companies, and she takes part in various exchange programs, including the Erasmus program .
In 2011 the Universidade Aberta was recognized by the European Foundation for Quality Management .
