history

  • Establishment : Sultan Qaboos issued royal decree 41/99 in 1999, which allowed the establishment of private universities in Oman. A founding committee was then established to prepare the foundation of the university. The establishment of the university was approved by regulation 1/2004 of the university minister on January 3, 2004.
  • Start of studies : In February 2004, the University of Sultan Qaboos received permission to use the Royal Boarding School in Nizwa as an interim campus until the new campus was completed. On March 14, 2004, all founding bodies were dissolved and the Board of Trustees was established. On October 16, 2004, the university started its studies with its first class, which included 1,334 students (about 88% women).
  • Moving into the new campus : 2006 was about 20 km outside of Nizwa near the hamlet of Birkat al-Mawz a new campus . It covers 250,000 m², on which around 10,000 m² of new building space has been created. The university is still under construction and in its final stage will have six faculties with a total of 8,000 students.
  • Planned final location : In the south of Nizwas, a new campus for 20,000 students is to be built on a new 1.5 million m² site. The master plan started in 2003; however, the construction phase is currently (as of May 20, 2010) on hold.
  • Cooperation with a German university : The University of Nizwa has been cooperating with the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) since November 2010 . Initially, the cooperation in the pharmaceutical sector is to begin. Research into medicinal plants in Oman would be obvious. Furthermore, the subjects Arabic and German, oriental studies and natural sciences were named as further potential areas in which the cooperation could be deepened. The University of Nizwa is also particularly interested in the training of talented young Omanis at the MLU, as it would have to employ mainly professors and lecturers from abroad for training in Germany. The English-language master’s programs at MLU are particularly suitable for studying abroad in Germany.
