Former university building

The Universitas Istropolitana (often incorrectly referred to as Academia Istropolitana since the 16th century ) in Pressburg (now Bratislava ) was the first university to be founded in what is now Slovakia . The current successor institution is the Comenius University in Bratislava . The word Istropolitana is derived from Istropolis ("Danube City"), the Graecizing name for Bratislava.

It was founded in 1465 by Pope Paul II , on behalf of the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus . It was the second university in what was then the Kingdom of Hungary (after the university in Fünfkirchen, now Pécs, founded in 1367). Numerous well-known lecturers from Austria, Italy and Poland taught at the university, including Galeotto Marzio and Johann Vitez . The university was closed in 1490 after Corvinus' death due to lack of funding. The university building in renaissance style still exists today and houses the college of musical arts .

In 2017, Slovakia is dedicating a 2 euro commemorative coin to the 550th anniversary of the founding of the Universitas Istropolitana.
