The University College Hospital ( UCH ) is a hospital in London . It is part of University College London Hospitals NHS Trust and teaching hospital of the University College London (UCL). The hospital is located on Euston Road in the London Borough of Camden . It is in the immediate vicinity of the main UCL campus. The nearest underground stations are Euston Square and Warrent Street .

history

The new building opened in 2005

The hospital was founded in 1834 as "North London Hospital". It was founded as a teaching hospital of UCL (then still "London University") eight years after its founding. The UCL's proposal to train the budding medical professionals at Middlesex Hospital was rejected by its management. Soon after it was founded, the North London Hospital was known as the University College Hospital.

On December 21, 1846, the first operation in Europe under ether anesthesia was performed at the UCH . The surgeon, Robert Liston , was the first professor to be appointed to the chair of surgery at the UCH in 1835.

In 1905 the UCH separated from the UCL. In 1906 a new hospital building, designed by Alfred Waterhouse , was opened in Gower Street, the so-called Cruciform Building. In 1914 the UCH merged with the National Dental Hospital, and in 1920 with the Royal Ear Hospital.

The Cruciform Building in 2007

Between 1974 and 1994 the hospital was operated by the Bloomsbury Area Health Authority, after which it was incorporated into the University College London NHS Trust . In 1995 the Cruciform Building was closed despite opposition from the population and the workforce. The building was purchased by UCL and serves as the headquarters of the Wolfson Institute for Biomedical Research. There are also course rooms for the biochemistry and medicine departments of the UCL Medical School .

In 2005 a new building with 75 822 m 2 was opened at the current location. The design comes from the architect Llewelyn Davies Yeang . The cost of 422 million pounds was borne by both private individuals and the public sector as part of a funding initiative.

In November 2008 the "Elizabeth-Garrett-Anderson Wing" was opened, which, with a few exceptions, bundles the entire spectrum of gynecology in one place.
