Founded in 1878 by Bishop Isaac Hellmuth and the Anglican Diocese of Huron, the university is one of the oldest in Canada. At that time her name was The Western University of London Ontario . In 1883, the first students received their awards in the subjects of art and medicine. The campus area is 1.6 square kilometers north of the Thames, which flows through the city. The main part of the campus consists of 75 buildings, but the university also has large landholdings outside the main campus.

The rector of the university is John Thompson and the president is Amit Chakma. With all twelve faculties and the three associated colleges combined, the university offers over 200 different educational qualifications and diplomas.

history

The university was founded on March 7, 1878 by Bishop Isaac Hellmuth (1817-1901) of the Anglican Diocese of Huron as The Western University of London Ontario . From then on, this included the Huron University College, which was founded in 1863. The first four faculties were arts, theology, law, and medicine. Teaching began in 1881 with 15 students. They completed their studies in 1883. Since 1908, the university is no longer bound by any denomination .

In 1916 the university acquired its current campus from the Kingsmill family. There are two memorials on campus for students who died in World War I : One mentions the names of 19 students and alumni of the university; a second commemorates the fallen from Middlesex County .

In 1923 the university was renamed The University of Western Ontario . The first buildings on the previously acquired property were the Arts Building (this is now the University College) and the Science Building, which today houses the chairs for physics and astronomy. The first lectures on the new site were held in 1924. The University College Tower, which is often used as a characteristic building in the external presentation of the university, was named Middlesex Memorial Tower in honor of those who had died in the war in the years before.

There are two World War II memorials in the physics and astronomy building: One gives the names of the fallen UWO students and graduates. A second honors the students who were trained at the university to serve in No. 10 Canadian General Hospital to serve.

In the post-war period, the number of students enrolled grew rapidly. At the same time a number of new faculties were founded - including a Graduate School , the College of Business Administration (now the Ivey Business School), the engineering faculty, the legal department, the educational science faculty and the Academy of Music .

Since 2012, the university has been using the name "Western University" in its external presentation. However, the legal name is still The University of Western Ontario .
