Unserfrau-Altweitra is a municipality with 981 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Gmünd district in Lower Austria .

geography

Unserfrau-Altweitra is located in the Waldviertel in Lower Austria. The area of ​​the municipality covers 40.19 km². 45.17 percent of the area is forested.

The community is located south of Gmünd an der Lainsitz . Cadastral communities are Altweitra, Heinreichs bei Weitra, Ober-Lembach, Pyhrabruck, Schagges, Ulrichs and Unserfrau. In Heinrichs there is a difference between the name of the cadastral community and that of the settlement. The cadastral community itself bears the name Heinr ei chs bei Weitra , while the place is called Heinr i chs bei Weitra .

The neighboring Czech town of Nové Hrady (Gratzen) can be reached via the road that leaves Pyhrabruck in a north-westerly direction .

In the west of the municipality the Gratzenbach flows in the Luigraben south of Pyhrabruck , which flows into the Strobnitz at Nové Hrady .

history

According to legend, a statue of the Virgin Mary was washed ashore during a flood, from which the name Unserfrau am Sande was derived and which prompted pilgrimages . The original chapel, which is still preserved today, was built at the end of the 12th century, next to this the parish church was built from 1250, which was expanded during the Gothic and Baroque periods . The heyday of the pilgrimage was the 17th century, at that time there was a medicinal bath in the place , from which the cistern on the church forecourt can still be visited. The pilgrimage finally ebbed under Joseph II .

Blazon : "Divided by gold and green, at the top two gold-studded, silver-tipped red roses , at the bottom a silver potato blossom, raised by a silver wavy bar."

Crest Explanation: The two red roses in the upper half of the emblem represent the two parish churches Nativity in Unserfrau and Assumption in Heinreichs while the white flower in the bottom half of that of Maria Theresa arranged cultivation of potatoes in Pyhrabruck, the first in Austrian Empire , remembered. The silver wave stands for the Lainsitz, the golden tinge in the coat of arms symbolizes the cultivation of grain, the green one the wealth of forests.

According to the results of the 2001 census, there were 1016 inhabitants. In 1991 the municipality had 983 inhabitants, in 1981 1019 and in 1971 1116 inhabitants.
