Security and Defense Subcommittee

The Subcommittee on Security and Defense (SEDE) of the European Parliament is attached to the Committee on Foreign Affairs as the main committee. The body was set up in 2004 at the beginning of the 6th electoral term and supports the Main Committee in its responsibilities in the common foreign and security policy as well as in the common security and defense policy . In July 2019, Nathalie Loiseau ( LREM / RE ) was elected chairman for the 9th legislative period (2019-2024).

The Security and Defense Subcommittee is a permanent subcommittee established under Rule 212 of the European Parliament's Rules of Procedure . The members of the body control the foreign policy of the European Commission and take part in the decision-making process for the common foreign and security policy (CFSP) and the common security and defense policy (CSDP).

Current electoral term

At the beginning of the 9th parliamentary term, in July 2019, the French MEP Nathalie Loiseau was elected chair of the subcommittee by the Renew Europe group. She is supported by the deputy chairpersons Nikos Androulakis ( PASOK / S&D ) from Greece, Kinga Gál ( Fidesz / EPP ) from Hungary, Özlem Demirel ( LINKE / GUE / NGL ) from Germany and Lukas Mandl ( ÖVP / EPP) from Austria.
