history

The place where Upernaviarsuk is today was inhabited earlier. Ancient ruins can still be found here today.

Upernaviarsuk was founded as the first modern agricultural settlement in Greenland in 1781 when Anders Olsen and his wife Tuperna settled here. After a short time their farm burned down and in 1782/1783 they moved 37 km further up the fjord, where they founded the settlement Igaliku . Her son Johannes Andersen rebuilt Upernaviarsuk and lived here himself until he took over the farm in Igaliku in 1786 after the death of his father.

In 1953, under the direction of the Dane Poul Bjerge (a brother-in-law of Jonathan Motzfeldt ), an agricultural research station with a nursery and nursery , where four types of vegetables are grown. Poul Bjerge was in charge of this until his retirement in 2000. In 1955, the shepherd's station founded in 1915 was moved from Qaqortoq to Upernaviarsuk. Today Greenland's state agricultural school is located in Upernaviarsuk, where you can train to be a shepherd, field or greenhouse farmer.

Upernaviarsuk has been part of the Kujataa UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017 .
