Urmas Reinsalu (born June 22, 1975 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician. From 2012 to 2015 he was party leader of the conservative Isamaa ja Res Publica Liit (IRL). Reinsalu was Estonian Minister of Justice from April 2015 to April 2019. Since then he has been Foreign Minister of the Republic of Estonia.

Life

Urmas Reinsalu graduated from high school in Tallinn in 1993. Until 1997 he studied law at the University of Tartu .

politics

Reinsalu has been politically active since 1992. In 1996/97 he was a consultant in the Estonian Ministry of Justice. He was also a member of the constitutional commission. In 1997/98 he was domestic policy advisor to the Estonian President Lennart Meri . From 1998 to 2001, Reinsalu headed the Estonian Presidential Office.

Then Urmas Reinsalu went into active party politics. In 2001/2002 Reinsalu was political secretary of the conservative party founding Res Publica . The party united in 2006 with the Fatherland Union ( Isamaaliit ) to form Isamaa ja Res Publica Liit (IRL). Reinsalu has been a member of the party executive since 2002.

From 2003 to 2012 Reinsalu was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). Until May 2012 he was parliamentary group leader of the IRL. In January 2012, Urmas Reinsalu was elected to succeed Mart Laar as party leader of the IRL.

On May 11, 2012, Urmas Reinsalu was appointed as the successor to Mart Laar by President Toomas Hendrik Ilves as the new Defense Minister of the Republic of Estonia. He took office on May 14th. Urmas Reinsalu left the cabinet on March 26, 2014 with the end of the government coalition and has since been chairman of the IRL group in the Estonian parliament.

From April 9, 2015 to November 23, 2016, Urmas Reinsalu was Estonian Minister of Justice in the Rõivas II cabinet of Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas . He took on the same post in the successor government to Jüri Ratas ( Ratas I cabinet ). After the parliamentary elections in 2019 , Reinsalu took over the post of Foreign Minister in the Ratas II cabinet on April 29, 2019 .

Reinsalu was established in May 2015 Russia with a travel ban occupied.

Private

Urmas Reinsalu is married and has two daughters.
