Uronarti (ancient Egyptian: Chesef- Iuntiu ) is a fortification of ancient Egypt in Nubia and is located in what is now Sudan . It is located about four kilometers north of Semna .

Location and structure

The ruins of the complex are located on an island a little above the 2nd Nile cataract southwest of Wadi Halfa . They were preserved in the dammed Lake Nubia . The fortress consisted of a main part with various barracks , administration buildings, a temple, storage facilities and strong walls almost ten meters thick. In the east there is a wing that is almost 200 meters long and consists only of a wall with bastions . This wing ran parallel to the Nile. To the west, outside the complex, there were some other structures, but they are not well preserved. Many seal impressions were found inside the fortress, showing extensive administrative activities.

About 600 meters southwest of the fortress, a complex of buildings facing exactly north-south was finally excavated, which may have been a palace.

In Uronarti a duplicate of the Semna border stele of Sesostris III. excavated. The stele is now in the National Museum of Sudan .

history

Uronarti was by Pharaoh Sesostris III. (1878–1842 / 1840 BC) erected. The temple was built in sandstone in the New Kingdom .
