Uwe Richrath grew up in Leverkusen- Rheindorf . After graduating from the comprehensive school in Rheindorf (Käthe-Kollwitz-Schule) in 1980, Richrath completed his community service with the German Red Cross in Cologne . In 1983 he enrolled at the University of Cologne to study business administration . In 1986 he decided to set up his own business, became a retail salesman and, until his election as mayor, ran a total of three textile stores in Remscheid and Wuppertal . Richrath has been married to his wife Anne since 1997 and has one son.

politics

After joining the SPD in 2000, Richrath became deputy chairman of the SPD local association Leverkusen-Rheindorf / Hitdorf in 2004, and took over the chair in the following year, which he held until 2014. Since 2013, he has also been deputy chairman of the SPD Leverkusen.

Richrath ran for the first time in 2004 for the City Council of Leverkusen. In 2009 he was able to move into the city council as a candidate for the list, he succeeded in moving into the city council again in the 2014 local elections. He worked in various committees, most recently in the main committee and in the committee for urban development, building and planning. In 2013 he became the building policy spokesman for the SPD council group in Leverkusen, whose deputy chairman he became in the same year.

After the municipal elections in 2009, Richrath became chairman of the supervisory board of the municipal housing company (WGL); In 2014 he also became chairman of the supervisory board of the Leverkusen Economic Development Corporation (WfL).

On September 13, 2015, Uwe Richrath was elected as the new Mayor of Leverkusen with 51.2 percent in the first ballot. He was inducted into office on October 21.
