Vahl's Wolffish ( Lycodes vahlii ) is a slender marine fish from cold regions of the northern Atlantic. Its distribution area extends from Svalbard south along the Scandinavian coast from the Kola peninsula to the Skagerrak . It can also be found on the south coast of Greenland , around Iceland and from the coast of Labrador to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia .

features

Vahl's wolffish has an elongated body with a surrounding fin edge, which is formed by the dorsal, caudal and anal fins that have grown together. In the north, e.g. B. off the coast of Greenland the fish can grow up to half a meter long, further south they only reach lengths of 25 to 30 centimeters. The dorsal fin has no indentation and is marked with up to three black-brown spots on the front. The sideline runs below the center of the body.

Way of life

Vahl's wolffish lives on the sea floor at depths of 65 to 1200 meters at water temperatures of 0 to 5 ° C. It feeds mainly on small crustaceans ( shrimp , krill ) and is itself an important prey fish for ling , tusk , halibut and black halibut . The eggs are relatively large with a diameter of 6 mm. They are deposited on the ocean floor.
