Gudenus had always shown strong historical interest. During his last activity at the Reich Chamber of Commerce, this had an impact in extensive publications. Since 1716 he had sponsored the new edition of the Mainz story of Nicolaus Serarius, first published in 1604, by Georg Christian Joannis after he had learned about Joannis plans through a bookseller advertisement. He also supported Joannis with other editing and publication projects. By 1724 at the latest, however, he fell out with the prolific writer Joannis because his way of working seemed too superficial to him. He now took over the editing of the material he had collected into his own hands. His main work was a monumental document book on the history of the Electorate of Mainz, published in five volumes in Göttingen , Frankfurt am Main and Leipzig (volume 5 was published posthumously by Heinrich Wilhelm Anton Buri ). It represents “ one of the most complete and richest collections on the history of the German Imperial Constitution ”. The extraordinary value of the work on the history of the Elector and Arch Chancellor of Mainz in general, as well as on the history of the Mainz Archbishopric in particular, is due on the one hand to the fact that Gudenus has many to his It was able to print documents that were still preserved for a time, which were lost in the chaos of war between the 18th and 20th centuries or through the dispersal of the Mainz archives. Only through Gudenus Edition were they made for memory, so that the knowledge of mankind was preserved. On the other hand, the work is of exceptional value in terms of the history of science. It had an exemplary effect on the editors of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica in the 19th century and has a firm place in the development of modern diplomacy and, above all, of the academic sciences .
