Vally Weigl (born September 11, 1894 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary ; died December 25, 1982 in New York , NY , USA ) was an Austrian-American composer and music therapist.

Life

Valerie Pick was born in 1894 as the daughter of the lawyer Josef Pick and his wife Charlotte, b. Rubinstein, born in Vienna. Her sister was Käthe Leichter . Vally Pick's musical talent was evident from an early age. She received piano lessons, after graduating from high school in Vienna, studied music history with Guido Adler and took composition lessons with Karl Weigl , whom she married in 1921. By the annexation of Austria in 1938, she was forced to flee and emigrated with her husband and her son in the United States. The early days of exile were marked by the difficulties the Weigl couple had in gaining a foothold in their new home. While Karl Weigl, who died in 1949, was unable to continue his successes as a composer and teacher in Vienna, Vally Weigl began with his first compositions. In addition to composing, she worked as a music therapist at various New York hospitals from the 1950s.

In 2009 the Vally-Weigl-Gasse in Vienna- Favoriten (10th district) was named after her.
