history

The cigar manufacturer Henri van Abbe from Eindhoven laid the foundation stone for the collection in 1909. In 1934 Van Abbe donated his private collection to the city of Eindhoven on the condition that the pictures had to be exhibited in a museum. In 1936, the present museum building was built on the east bank of the Dommel, based on a design by architect Alexander Kropholler . Kropholler created a sober brick building in the traditionalist style.

When the dimensions of the building no longer met the requirements, the decision was made to expand in the mid-1990s. Behind the Kropholler building, the Amsterdam architect Abel Cahen created a new wing in the form of deconstructivism . The interior of the museum and library were designed by the Flemish designer Maarten van Severen . The extension was inaugurated on May 17, 2003 by Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands .
