Varavudh Suteethorn ( Thai : ว รา วุ ธ สุธี ธร ) (born October 10, 1948 ) is a Thai geologist and vertebrate paleontologist .

Life

Varavudh Suteethorn was born on October 10, 1948 in Nakhon Pathom , ( Thailand ). In 1967 he graduated from Chiang Mai University with a B.Sc. and from 1974 worked as a geologist in the Geological Survey Division at the Thai Department of Mineral Resources. As part of this activity, Suteethorn made geological field surveys, including in northeastern Thailand .

After dinosaur fossils were identified for the first time in Isan in 1976, intensive research began in the early 1980s by a joint Thai-French research team. Suteethorn was appointed to this research team from the start because of his knowledge of the terrain. The work of the team proved to be extremely successful and led to numerous new discoveries and corresponding specialist publications in which Suteethorn was significantly involved. At the same time he completed his training as a fossil taxidermist in France and Canada and received a corresponding diploma from the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris in 1986 .

From 1992 he took over the leadership of the Thai group within the research team. From 1995 he holds a Ph. D. (Biology) from the University of Maha Sarakham, where he has been working at the Palaeontological Research and Education Center (PRC) since 1996.

His research area is the Mesozoic and Cenozoic vertebrate fauna of Thailand. Suteethorn described as a co-author of several dinosaurs, including phuwiangosaurus , Siamotyrannus , Kinnareemimus , isanosaurus and Siamodon but fossil mammals such as Khoratpithecus , an early relative of modern orangutans , fossil giant glider Dermotherium major or Anthracotheren Siamotherium krabiense and numerous other fossil vertebrates.

Varavudh Suteethorn's son, Suravech Suteethorn, is also a vertebrate paleontologist at Maha Sarakham University.
