history

Due to its importance in shipbuilding , the place was bitterly fought over by the two cities of Savona and Genoa. Until 1227, Varazze was a fief of the Ponzone family . As a result, it became an autonomous municipality and in 1290 Malocello sold it to the Republic of Genoa . With the emergence of the locality, the republic gained control over large stretches of land including the localities of Celle Ligure and Albisola .

In 1525 Ugo De Moncarda , commander of Charles V's fleet , lost a naval battle against the French near Varazze and was then taken prisoner. In 1798 Napoleon Bonaparte dissolved the Genoese republic and annexed the entire territory.

After the fall of Napoleon, Varazze, like the entire region, became the property of the Kingdom of Sardinia . In 1861 Varazze was incorporated into the Kingdom of Italy .
