Varnhalt is a district of Baden-Baden with around 2000 inhabitants.

Geography and history

The village is located at an altitude of 204 m on the western slope of the Yberg ( 520  m ), southwest of Baden-Baden. Viticulture and wine trade have been one of the residents' main sources of income for centuries. The Nägelsförsterhof winery has existed since 1588. Mainly Riesling wines with the well-known names "Steingrübler" and "Klosterbergfelsen" are grown . There is an extensive network of trails between the individual vineyards, from which you can see the Vosges and the Palatinate Forest when the visibility is good .

Along with Steinbach and Neuweier, Varnhalt is one of the so-called Rebland communities that were incorporated into Baden-Baden in 1972. All four wine villages are on the Ortenau Wine Trail (marking: red diamond with blue grapes on a white background), which extends from Gernsbach to Diersburg . The vineyard area cultivated by the four municipalities is one of the largest closed wine-growing areas in Germany with its 325 hectares.

In addition to the towns of Steinbach with detour and Neuweier, Varnhalt has had the right to bottle wine in Bocksbeuteln since the 18th century . This right was granted by the Würzburg bishop in the 18th century ; the three places are the only places outside Franconia in Germany that are allowed to do so.
