Vassos Karageorghis

Vassos Karageorghis (born April 29, 1929 in Trikomo , Cyprus ; died December 21, 2021 ) was a Cypriot classical archaeologist .

Karageorghis studied Classical Archeology at the University of London from 1948 to 1952 . He was then second curator until 1960, then until 1963 curator at the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia . In 1957, the carried doctorate at London University. From 1963 to 1989 he was in charge of the Cyprus Antiquities Administration. During this time he taught classical archeology from 1968 to 1971 at the Université du Québec in Canada and was visiting professor at the University of Oxford and at the École pratique des hautes études in Paris. In 1992, Karageorghis received a call to the one founded a few years earlierUniversity of Cyprus , where he taught until his retirement in 1996. From 1997 he was visiting professor at Harvard University . From 2013 to 2019 he was Associate Professor at the Cyprus Institute. In 2016 he was one of four founding members of the Cypriot Academy of Science, Literature and the Arts.

In addition to his academic teaching, Karageorghis worked as a practical archaeologist in the field research of Cyprus for many decades. From 1952 to 1973 he led the excavations in Salamis , from 1962 to 1981 in Kition , from 1979 to 1987 in Maa-Palaeokastro and Pyla-Kokkinokremmos . The fruit of his work is an extensive body of literature, which by 1992 comprised 56 monographs and 297 articles in periodicals and anthologies. At Karageorghis' instigation, the holdings of Cypriot antiquities were published in larger museums and smaller collections of antiquities around the world; in many cases he himself was involved in these works and contributed to these catalogs. Thanks to this work, the art of ancient Cyprus is now comparatively well developed and easily accessible.

In 1973 he was elected a corresponding member of the British Academy . From 1974 Karageorghis was a member of the Academy of Athens , from 1978 of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and from 1984 a foreign member ( associé étranger ) of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres . For his achievements he was made Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1971 , and in 1980 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Order of Merit, 1st class). From 1997 he was a holder of the Austrian Decoration of Honor for Science . He was the bearer of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Commander).

Vassos Karageorghis died on December 21, 2021 at the age of 92.
