Vera Beths (born June 1, 1946 in Haarlem ) is a Dutch violinist and university lecturer.

Life

After her first lessons with her father, Beths studied violin with Herman Krebbers at the Amsterdam Conservatory . In 1969 she won first prize at the Oskar Back Competition. The award enabled her to study with Ivan Galamian in New York, and in the summer she also took part in the Rudolf Serkins Marlboro Festival in Vermont. Beths teaches at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague and gives classes at the Marlboro Festivals.

As a violin soloist, she has performed with various Dutch orchestras and under the direction of conductors such as Bernard Haitink , Kyrill Kondraschin , Jean Fournet , Lorin Maazel , Walter Susskind and Edo de Waart . She is particularly interested in contemporary music. For several years she belonged to the Rondom Kwartet (with Reinbert de Leeuw , piano, George Pieterson , clarinet and Anner Bylsma , cello), which specialized in this repertoire. Composers such as Peter Schat , Louis Andriessen , Willem Breuker , Misha Mengelberg , Geert van Keulen , Philip Glass and John Adams dedicated works to her. With the Ensemble L'Archibudelli (with Anner Bylsma and Jürgen Kussmaul ) she plays chamber music works from the 18th and 19th centuries, including lesser-known compositions from the Romantic period. Recordings appeared u. a. in the Sony Classical's Vivarte series .

Vera Beths has two daughters: the actress Katja Herbers from her first marriage to the oboist Werner Herbers and the filmmaker Carine Bijlsma from her second marriage to Anner Bylsma.
