The Association of European Airlines (short: AEA ; English for 'Association of European Airlines') was the association of European airlines based in Brussels .

history

The chairmen of the airlines Air France , KLM Royal Dutch Airlines , Sabena and Swissair founded the association as Air Research Bureau in 1953 . British European Airways (forerunner of British Airways) and SAS Scandinavian Airlines followed shortly afterwards . In 1973 the association changed its name to Association of European Airlines .

In the dispute over how to deal with the competition from airlines from the Arab region, in particular Emirates , Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways , several large airlines left the association in spring 2015, including Iberia , British Airways , Air Berlin and most recently Alitalia (all with Shareholders from the Arab region).

At the beginning of December 2016, the association ceased its activities with immediate effect and, in accordance with the resolution of the Executive Committee, was dissolved on December 31, 2016, not least because of the dispute over competition from the Arab region and the subsequent resignation of several members.
