Association of German Chemists

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Association of German Chemists ( VDCh ) was a scientific association that emerged from the German Society for Applied Chemistry in 1896 when it was renamed .

The latter emerged in 1887 from the Association of Analytical Chemists , which mainly represented chemists working in the field (founded in 1877), as a professional representative. The Zeitschrift für Angewandte Chemie had been a membership journal since 1887 and became the property of the association in 1904. The association office was set up in Leipzig in 1907. The VDCh founded district associations throughout Germany and abroad (e.g. in 1899 in Belgium, 1900 in New York, 1909 for South America) and around 1910 was the largest chemical association in the world. At this time, prizes such as the Adolf von Baeyer Memorial Coin or the Emil Fischer Medal were awarded for the first time, which are still awarded today by the Society of German Chemists . VDCh, German Chemical Society (DChG) and the Association for the Protection of the Interests of the Chemical Industry in Germany (forerunner of the Association of the Chemical Industry VCI) founded Verlag Chemie GmbH in 1921 . From 1936, Nazi content made itself felt for the first time in a new statute of the VDCh. In addition, the association was incorporated into the NS-Bund Deutscher Technik together with the DChG . Due to the bombing raids, the headquarters of the association was relocated to Grünberg in Hesse during the Second World War .

On September 20, 1949, the VDCh merged into the Gesellschaft Deutscher Chemiker (GDCh), which had existed since 1946 , without the predecessor companies DChG and VDCh being liquidated because an all-German general assembly would have been necessary for this.
