The United Cathedral Founders of Merseburg and Naumburg and the Collegiate Foundation Zeitz (United Cathedral Founders for short) is a non-profit foundation under public law in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The legal historical roots of today's foundation of the United Cathedral Founders lie in the cathedral chapters created with the dioceses at the Merseburg Cathedral Foundation in 968 (or in 1004 after the restitution of the Merseburg diocese ) as well as at the Naumburg Cathedral Foundation in 1028 and the chapter of the founded after 1028 Zeitz collegiate foundation as a result of the imperial church policy pursued by Emperor Otto I and his successors. In the cathedral chapters, a community of canonically living clergy of a cathedral church was embodied , which initially mostly came from the clergy of the parish church that previously existed on site and was often separated from the person and property of a diocese. As a spiritual advisory body to the bishop, the cathedral clergy initially followed the 816 idea of a monk-like Vita communis in the Aachen canonic rule (Institutio canonicorum Aquisgranensis) in the performance of its spiritual duties . The tasks of a cathedral chapter mostly included the implementation of (choir) services in the cathedral, the reading of masses for the deceased, the management of the diocese in times of the vacancy and after the investiture dispute also the participation in the election of a bishop according to the Wormser Concordat - also the support of the bishop in the diocese (spiritual domain) and Hochstift or Niederstift (secular domain). In the course of the High Middle Ages, the assets of the cathedral chapters became independent from the episcopal estate, so that the canons also took on tasks of economic management and territorial administration. Since then, members of noble families, the ministry of the bishopric or vassals of the bishop have mostly been incorporated in the cathedral chapters.

After the Reformation in Saxony, the cathedral monasteries and the collegiate monastery continued to live as Evangelical Lutheran institutions; in addition, there was the Procuratorial Office established by Duke Moritz von Sachsen-Zeitz (1653–1681) and the church box office at Zeitz. However, their influence on spiritual matters decreased noticeably. Nonetheless, the cathedral and collegiate monasteries continued to exist in their legal subjectivity as publicly privileged and legally independent corporations endowed with statutory autonomy, self-administration, organs and seals, even if they were no longer part of the church in the canonical sense. As a result of the secularization that began at the beginning of the 19th century with the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss , the cathedral chapters were not abolished on the territory of the electorate and later Kingdom of Saxony - as elsewhere - and their assets were incorporated into the lordly administration, but after the cession of Saxon areas to the kingdom Prussia after the Congress of Vienna the legal status of the cathedral and collegiate donors in Merseburg, Naumburg and Zeitz in what is now the province of Saxony initially uncertain, even if the Prussian-Saxon peace treaty of May 18, 1815 assured their continued existence and the Prussian king later confirmed this, most recently by the cabinet order of June 18, 1879.

After more than 100 years of various reform ideas, the Saxon cathedral and collegiate donors (together with the Brandenburg Cathedral Chapter ) were reorganized from the originally church institutions in 1930 by resolution of the Prussian state government and the enforcement of new statutes into independent foundations under public law . A joint statute, also decreed by the Prussian state government in 1935, essentially confirmed the status of an independent foundation under public law with the novelty of a joint cathedral chapter. The subsequent statutes of 1946, 1947 and 1950 as well as the legal conceptions associated with the political upheavals did not change this legal status. It was not until the statutes of 1994 that the United Cathedral Founders were merged into a foundation under public law. As an outdated foundation under public law, the United Cathedral Founders continue to be regarded as a state foundation under public law in accordance with current foundation law . After the United Cathedral Donors survived the Napoleonic occupation, Prussian restoration , two world wars, Soviet occupation and East German socialism, after German reunification they returned to the public consciousness through cultural and historical activities.

Legal form and purpose of the foundation

In addition to the real estate, this includes movable art assets such as altars, sculptures and paintings as well as the archive and library holdings.
