The club synagogue Müllnergasse was a synagogue in the 9th Viennese district of Alsergrund . It was built in the years 1888/89 at Müllnergasse 21 ( Roßau ) according to plans by Max Fleischer and destroyed in the pogrom night in 1938 .

history

The Müllnergasse synagogue was built in 1888/89 according to plans by the architect Max Fleischer . During the November pogroms on the night of November 9th to 10th, 1938, the temple was set on fire by a group of SS men led by Otto Skorzeny . The present temple servant Max Ullmann was severely mistreated during this procedure. Skorzeny proceeded according to a list of the Gestapo , Section II G. It was not until sixteen years later that there was a trial in this matter, in which witnesses, however, blamed men and boys from outside the district without uniform for the crime.

Building

The synagogue on Müllnergasse was built between two residential buildings on Müllnergasse. Since the outer facade to Müllnergasse also formed the east side with the Holy of Holies, the main entrance to the synagogue was at Grünentorgasse 13. In contrast, there were two side entrances in Müllnergasse. Externally, the synagogue was characterized by its double tower facade with two 35 meter high, pointed towers and a Gothic facade in brick shell. The interior of the synagogue had three aisles, whereby the women were not accommodated in a gallery , but in the side aisles raised by six steps. The central nave offered 322 seats for men, the side aisles 248 seats for women. The walls of the central nave were supported by six pointed arches on cast iron pillars and contained large tracery windows that let the sunlight into the interior. The ceiling was adorned with painted and gilded zinc cladding made of hammered zinc sheet.
