Transfiguration Cathedral (Tolyatti)
The Transfiguration Cathedral ( Russian Спасо-Преображенский собор ) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in the city of Tolyatti in Russia . The cathedral, which is dedicated to the transfiguration of the Lord , was built between 1996 and 2002.
history
The construction of the cathedral was decided during the 1991 August coup . In addition, a baptistery and a bell tower should be built. The original plan was to build the Transfiguration Cathedral on the banks of the Volga and thus on the outskirts of the city. The decision was then made to locate it in a residential area.
Construction began in 1992 with the construction of the baptistery in honor of John the Baptist . Construction of the Cathedral of the Transfiguration began in 1996 and was completed in 2002. It was consecrated on August 19, 2002 by the Archbishop of Samara and Syzran. The building owner and financier was the automobile manufacturer AwtoWAS, based in Tolyatti .
For several years the last part of the cathedral, the bell tower , has been under construction . After its completion, this should reach a height of 76 meters.

The cathedral was designed by Moscow architect Dmitri Sergejewitsch Sokolow in collaboration with three Tolyatti-based companies, including AwtoWAS.
There is space for around 3000 people on a total area of almost 2800 square meters. The height to the cross on the central dome is 62 meters. This and the four smaller domes are gold-plated and covered with stainless steel . The largest weighs 26 tons.
Inside the building there is an altar in honor of the Transfiguration of the Lord. The iconostasis is 15 meters high. The interior is illuminated by 13 chandeliers , the largest of which is almost ten meters high.
The floor is made up of mosaics made from twelve different types of marble . Local jewelers made 16 icons in silver frames for the cathedral .
