Treaty of Humen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Treaty of Humen ( Chinese  虎門 條約  /  虎门 条约 , Pinyin Hǔmén Tiáoyuē ) was signed on October 8, 1843 between Qing China and England and supplemented the Treaty of Nanking of 1842.

It sets tariffs for certain commercial goods such as tea , silk , cotton , woolen goods , metals , ivory and alcoholic beverages . It also contains a so-called most favored nation clause , according to which all rights that China grants third countries are automatically granted to England. Ultimately, British citizens were exempted from Chinese justice and subjected to that of their consulates .
