Verus

Verus († 219 ) was a Roman politician who became a usurper in 219 .

Verus was an ambitious upstart who used his rank as centurion as a stepping stone into the Roman Senate . He was later appointed commander of the legio III Gallica and thus took over a unit whose soldiers were increasingly dissatisfied with the rule of the incumbent Emperor Elagabal .

In 219 the legionaries rebelled openly. Verus placed himself at the head of this movement and declared himself emperor. However, he had clearly underestimated the power of the incumbent emperor. The Legion was defeated and Verus himself captured and executed. Eventually the Legion of Elagabal was dissolved and its former location Tire was revoked the prestigious status of a metropolis .
