Vest (judicial district)

In the Middle Ages, the term vest denoted a court ( Gogericht ) with the associated judicial district. From its origin, the word vest or firmly means something like “lawful” or “legal”.

Of these, only the latter has survived in linguistic usage, although it was replaced in 1816 by the geographically somewhat differently demarcated district of Recklinghausen .
