via donau - Österreichische Wasserstraßen-Gesellschaft mbH ( proper spelling : viadonau ) is a company of the Austrian Ministry of Transport . It was founded in 2005 to maintain and develop the Danube waterway .
Viadonau together with the Hydrographic Central Office (HZB, today Department VII / 3 BMLFUW ) and the hydrographic organizational units of the provincial governments form the Hydrographic Service of Austria.
history
On January 1, 2005, viadonau was founded by the then Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology . viadonau was created through the amalgamation of Österreichische Donau-Betriebs AG, Österreichische Donau-Technik GmbH, via donau Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH for telematics and Danube shipping and the privatized waterways directorate (formerly the Federal Electricity Construction Office ) .
In addition, she is the managing director of the Danube Flood Protection Competition (DHK), an association of three councils, the federal government , the province of Lower Austria and the city of Vienna , which was created in 1927 as the successor to the Danube Regulation Commission . The commission had already been set up in 1849 for the great Viennese regulation of the Danube . The competition as an institution still exists today.

viadonau has around 270 employees who work at a headquarters, four service centers and nine Danube locks.

tasks
The Waterways Act regulates the tasks and services to be provided by viadonau. It represents the legal basis for all activities and projects of the company.
- Infrastructure management: viadonau ensures an efficient and reliable waterway infrastructure. This includes the care and maintenance of the banks, the creation of the fairway parameters and the ongoing provision of hydrographic and hydrological data ( hydrographic service ) .
- Flood protection: viadonau employees take care of important agendas in the field of flood protection along the Danube in Vienna and Lower Austria on behalf of the Danube Flood Protection Competition (DHK). Viadonau is also responsible for the renovation of flood protection systems on the March and the lower Thaya. In the construction sections on the March and lower Thaya, the flood service is managed by viadonau.
- Ecological measures on the Danube: The company also carries out numerous hydraulic engineering and renaturation projects. The connection of oxbow lakes and floodplain landscapes as well as the dismantling of the Danube create new habitats for animals and plants.
- Traffic management on the Austrian Danube: With DoRIS ( Danube River Information Services ) , viadonau operates an information and management system for shipping on the Austrian Danube. DoRIS has been in operation since 2006. viadonau is working flat out on new and improved services. In addition, viadonau supports the implementation of River Information Services in the entire Danube region (so the system was expanded to SlovRIS in Slovakia in 2014).
The operation of the Danube locks is also part of the traffic management area. - Development and strengthening of inland navigation: viadonau is working on making inland navigation more attractive in order to transport more goods on the Danube. New initiatives and services are constantly being designed and implemented. Together with national and international partners, they are working on the modernization of Danube shipping. The National Action Plan (NAP) was significantly co-developed by viadonau and defines the priorities for Austrian shipping policy in the coming years. At the European level, the NAIADES action program has succeeded in firmly anchoring the importance of inland waterway transport. NAIADES sets the strategy for shipping in Europe and viadonau was also significantly involved in the implementation.
- Transport development: Inland shipping already offers the economy attractive logistics solutions. viadonau works closely with ports, as well as the manufacturing and shipping industries, in order to continually develop and implement new initiatives and services.
