A vibration plate (also vibrating plate or Flächenrüttler ) is a motor driven construction machine for soil compaction on medium-sized faces. They have been used since the 1950s and are now standard equipment on many construction sites. There are both independently forward-running and reversing (forward and reverse) machines. Vibratory plates are usually hand-held.

For larger areas come road rollers used, with smaller vibrorammer (also Rüttelstampfer called), and for compacting concrete vibration boards .

Mode of action

In the vibrating plate, one, two or three shafts with integrated unbalances are driven by a motor , depending on the design . The resulting centrifugal forces cause both the movement and the compression effect of the vibrating plate. The centrifugal forces are well above the weight of the machine and briefly lift the machine a few millimeters from the ground with each rotation of the imbalances. This moves the plate forwards or backwards. Shortly afterwards the plate falls back to the ground. Due to the built-up kinetic energy and centrifugal force, it briefly achieves a high surface pressure and compresses the material below it.

Performance and size

Small devices generate centrifugal forces of around 10  kN , large plates up to around 130 kN. The operating weight (mass) is usually between about 40 kg and about 1,200 kg.

The plates are driven by reciprocating , rotary , electric or hydraulic motors .

Compaction control

To check the compaction performance , many vibratory plates are now equipped with a so-called area-wide compaction control. It provides the operator with information about when the subsoil is sufficiently compacted and whether there are weak points in the base course that could cause the soil to settle later. The measuring system can work as follows, for example: A sensor is installed on the base plate of the soil compactor. This sensor measures changes in the vibration behavior during compaction and uses a so-called frequency band analysis to establish the relationship to the soil stiffness. The result is shown to the operator on a display with the aid of a light-emitting diode scale. The advantage compared to conventional test methods, which can only be carried out after the compaction process has been completed and which are necessary in any case, is the time saved. Since less reworking and compacting trips are required, the workload is also reduced. The compaction controls also make a significant contribution to quality assurance, especially in cramped workspaces, such as sewer construction or backfilling. A first such measuring device was developed in 2004 by the Institute for Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Siegen in cooperation with the manufacturer Weber Maschinentechnik (based in Bad Laasphe ).

safety

In Germany, according to the guidelines of the employers' liability insurance association, an annual UVV check is required for power-operated compressors and vibrating plates.

Sports

In Eddelak , a town in Dithmarschen in Schleswig-Holstein , the German championship in the vibrating plate race was held in 2011 and 2012.
