Victor Lemoine (born October 21, 1823 in Delme , Lorraine , † December 11, 1911 in Nancy ) was a French plant breeder . Many of his breeds, especially the lilac and peony varieties, are still very common today.

Life

Lemoine came from a family that had produced gardeners and plant breeders for several generations. After graduating from school, he worked for several years in various leading European horticulture and plant breeding companies, including that of Louis van Houtte in Ghent , Belgium .

In 1849 he founded his own nursery in Nancy.

Victor Lemoine and his wife Marie had a son Émile Lemoine (1862 to 1942) and a grandson Henri Lemoine (1897 to 1982) who continued the nursery. It was not closed until 1955.

In 1894, Victor Lemoine was the first French man to be awarded the Veitch Memorial Medal by the British Royal Horticultural Society . He was so famous in France that the Société Nationale d'Horticulture de France raised funds after his death to erect a monument to him in Nancy.

One of his most important works is the production of new lilac varieties ( Syringa ), which he began in 1870 and which was continued by Émile Lemoine and Henri Lemoine. In total, they bred more than 200 new varieties. Among other things, as is Syringa X hyacinthiflora called hybrid group, a cross between Syringa oblata and Syringa vulgaris back at them. "Mme Lemoine", the first white variety with double flowers, is still popular.

To this day, his cultivation of pipe bushes ( Philadelphus ), begonias ( Begonia ) and peonies ( Paeonia ) are also setting the tone . The following are examples of the peony varieties: Le Printemps (1905), Primevere (1906), Sarah Bernhardt (1906) and Solange (1907),

As early as 1852, shortly after he founded his nursery, the magazine Revue Horticole mentioned his breeding of a purslane with a double flower envelope. Just two years later, cinquefoil ( Potentilla ) followed with a double flower envelope ( Gloire de Nancy ) and the first twist fruit hybrids ( Streptocarpus ).

At the same time Lemoine was engaged in fuchsias ( Fuchsia ) and bred more than 250 new varieties. Together with the Englishman James Lye , he shaped the cultivation of fuchsias in the 19th century.

In the last 15 years of his life he worked other ornamental plants with a variety, such as Astilbe ( Astilbe ), larkspur ( Delphinium ), deutzia ( Deutzia ), gladiolus ( Gladiolus ), Coral Bells ( Heuchera ), barbs ( Penstemon ), dahlias ( Dahlia ) , chrysanthemums ( Chrysanthemum ) Phlox ( Phlox ), saxifrage ( Saxifraga ), Pelargonium ( Pelargonium ), Clematis and honeysuckle ( Lonicera ).

In addition to the breeding of many new varieties, we also owe Victor Lemoine the importation of new ornamental plants, for example the sparrow species Spiraea thunbergii .
