Viggo Johansen

Viggo Johansen (born January 3, 1851 in Copenhagen ; † December 18, 1935 there ) was a Danish painter and draftsman .

life and work

Johansen was the son of the Icelandic merchant Fred. Christoph Johansen (1804–1874) and his wife Camilla Olivia Petrine (née Jepsen, 1815–1892). From 1868 to 1875 he studied at the Art Academy in Copenhagen. After three unsuccessful attempts to pass the final exam, he left the art academy in 1875.

In 1876 Johansen exhibited a portrait of his sister. In 1877 he exhibited “A Meal” and “A Visit to the Neighbor”. These pictures testified to great artistic talent.

The simple truth of nature and solid execution of these pictures was influenced by the older Dutch painting. During this time he stayed in Hornbæk . Here he painted scenes in small format from the domestic life of fishermen.

In 1880 Johansen married; from now on scenes from family life played a prominent part in his art. In 1882 he painted the life-size figure "Fish woman in a gateway". This was followed by pictures with intimate bathing scenes, chats by the fireplace, singing on the piano, the children's schoolwork and party parties in his home. In this respect, Johansen continued the tradition of the Eckersberg School.

Johansen's works now also attracted attention abroad. Johansen's pictures show interiors and numerous landscapes. His color technique shows the dissolving effect of light on color; sometimes his painting technique touches pointillism . In some of his pictures a peculiar, mysterious romantic mood is created, which stands in contrast to the simple motifs.

A stay in Dragør on Amager was very important for him in this regard.

In 1882, 1884 and 1885 Johansen traveled with the support of the Art Academy. In 1885, 1887 and 1889 he exhibited in Holland and Paris ; where it was also awarded.

In 1886 in Copenhagen he received the Thorvaldsen exhibition medal for the painting “Abendplauderei” . He also won medals at the world exhibitions in Vienna and Chicago and at international exhibitions in Berlin and Munich .

In 1887 he became a member of the Stockholm Art Academy - later he also became an honorary member of the Stockholm Academy. From 1888 to 1906 Johansen taught at the art school for women. In 1906 he was appointed professor at the art academy. From 1911 to 1914 he was its director. In 1898 and 1904 he traveled to Italy .

He was married to Martha (nee Møller, 1861–1929) since August 12, 1880. The couple had several children.
