Vijayananda (Wijeyananda) Dahanayake (born October 22, 1902 , † May 4, 1997 in Galle District , Southern Province ) was a Sri Lankan politician .

biography

Dahanayake was initially a member of the left-wing Lanka Sama Samaja Party before becoming a member of SWRD Bandaranaike's Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SFLP) . This appointed him as Minister of Education in the government.

After the assassination of Bandaranaike on September 26, 1959, he succeeded him as Prime Minister of Sri Lanka . He held this office until the next general election in March 1960. The SFLP was subject to the United National Party , so that Dudley Shelton Senanayake on March 21, 1960 was the new Prime Minister. Dahanayake himself also lost his mandate as a member of parliament in these elections .

On March 27, 1965 Dudley Senanayake appointed him Secretary of the Interior (Minister of Home Affairs) in his office until May 29, 1970.

Most recently he was Minister of Cooperatives during the tenure of Prime Minister Ranasinghe Premadasa between 1986 and 1988.
