Viking Air Limited is an aviation company based in Sidney in the Canadian province of British Columbia . Today Viking Air Limited is part of the Canadian Longview Aviation Capital Corp. (LAC). The company is a service company for aircraft trade, - leasing and - maintenance .

history

It was founded in 1970 by Nils Christensen. All types of aircraft were overhauled, serviced and converted, but the company specialized in flying boats. In 1983 Christensen acquired exclusive rights from de Havilland Canada to manufacture parts and distribute the DHC-2 Beaver , DHC-2T Turbo Beaver, and DHC-3 Otter . He retired as President of Viking Air in 1987.

In 2006 Viking Air also took over the type certifications of the former De Havilland Canada aircraft types DHC-1 Chipmunk , DHC-2 Beaver , DHC-2T Turbo Beaver , DHC-3 Otter , DHC-4 Caribou , DHC-5 Buffalo , DHC-6 Twin Otter and DHC-7 sold to Viking Air by Bombardier Aerospace .

In the same year, Viking Air also took over the type certification of the amphibious aircraft TR-1 Trigull from Trident Aircraft . Viking Air also acquired the two remaining Trident TR-1 Trigull prototypes.

In 2016, Viking Air again bought the production and worldwide maintenance of the Canadair CL-415 amphibious aircraft and the rights to the predecessor model Canadair CL-215 from Bombardier . At the time of the takeover, 170 aircraft of these two types were still in service with 21 different operators worldwide.

On November 8, 2018, it was announced that Bombardier would sell the rights, production and worldwide maintenance of the DHC-8 to parent company Longview Aviation Capital for US $ 300 million. Longview also wants to take over the De Havilland brand. Longview Aviation Capital founded De Havilland Aircraft of Canada on June 3, 2019 . It will kick off with the formal closing of the transaction, through which Longview Aviation Capital will take over the entire DHC-8 program including the 100, 200 and 300 series and 400 series program from Bombardier Aerospace.

Aircraft production

On April 2, 2007, Viking Air announced an order for 27 aircraft. Since 2008 the - meanwhile modernized - DHC-6 Twin Otter has been produced again in the form of the DHC-6-400. The maiden flight of the new series took place on October 1, 2008 in Vancouver at Vancouver International Airport . The machines are powered by two modern Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-34/35 turboprop engines.
