The Viking Hills are a range of low hills in East Antarctic Victoria Land . The hills, characterized by ledges of reddish granite and chocolate-brown dolerite , loom between Flagship Mountain and Mount Davidson in the Convoy Range .
The mountains were mapped and geologically investigated by participants in a campaign that ran from 1976 to 1977 as part of New Zealand's Victoria University's Antarctic Expeditions . The naming was based on that of the Mars Hills and because of their similarity to the reddish rock formations that can be seen on recordings from the Mars probes Viking I and II between July and September 1976.
