Vila do Conde is a city in northwestern Portugal , 32 kilometers by road north of Porto at the mouth of the Ave River .

The town

history

The Romans already founded a fort high on a hill above the river . The area was later settled by the Celts . The city was first mentioned in a document as Villa de Comite ("City of the Count" = Vila do Conde ) in 953 . Dom Sancho gave it to his royal lover Ribeirinha (Dona Maria Paes Ribeira) in 1209 .

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the city's port had developed into one of the most important in the country. Accordingly, a royal customs office ( Alfândega Régia ) was set up in Vila do Conde in 1487 . The brisk shipping traffic meant that numerous shipyards were built near the mouth of the Rio Ave.

Around 1500, Vila do Conde was elevated to Vila (small town) by King Manuel I ; in 1988 Vila do Conde was given city status ( Cidade ).

Sights and culture

The Mosteiro de Santa Clara , a former Carmelite convent , founded in 1318, now stands on the site of the former Roman fort and presumably the later count's castle . At the apse ends of the Monastery, 7 km long, 999 sheets from 1705 to 1714 built the aqueduct that of Terroso in the mountains near Povoa de Varzim brings you here and for long stretches still very well preserved.

In the city center, at the market, is the parish church (port .: Igreja Matriz) São João Baptista (St. John the Baptist) . The church was built from 1500/1514 over a cross-shaped floor plan with side apses and battlements. The left aisle is flanked by a mighty, wide bell tower.

In front of the church there is a pelourinho ( stake ) with a twisted column shaft and with the arm of justice at the top of the column proclaims the power of the state. A small chapel with a tiled facade can be visited nearby.

About six kilometers east of Vila do Conde, near the settlement of Vila Fria, are the hermit caves of Sabariz .

The annual Curtas Vila do Conde short film festival has been held here since 1993 and has since grown into a music, art and culture festival.

The Banco Borges e Irmão (BBI) building designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira was awarded the Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture in 1988 .

Sports

Vila do Conde is the hometown of the soccer club Rio Ave FC , which has played in the top Portuguese league since the 2007/2008 season .
