Geographical location
Villa San Giovanni is located on the Strait of Messina , a few kilometers from Sicily . In the north it borders on Scilla , in the south on the city of Reggio Calabria and in the east on Campo Calabro .
history
Villa San Giovanni has long been known for the manufacture of silk . Today there is not much left of the 56 silk weavers that were once there.
Villa San Giovanni was twice destroyed by earthquakes : the first time in 1783 and then in 1908 (the Messina earthquake ), which was the strongest earthquake in the history of Italy.
economy
Villa San Giovanni's economy is strongly linked to the sea. Due to its location, besides the port of Reggio Calabria, it is the main connection point with the Sicilian Messina . Villa San Giovanni is located on the north-south connection E 45 . Numerous ferries depart from here, including those of the Bluvia line, a subsidiary of Italian railways. These are also used to translate trains to Sicily.
