history

Until the end of the 19th century, the district area was just a large, agriculturally used area. In 1878 the Canadian Pacific Railway opened a new rail line to downtown Montreal, which facilitated the development of the area. In 1896 the municipality of Villeray was founded, where the Villeray Quarry Company operated a quarry. The company and the place were named after Louis Rouer de Villeray , who belonged to the colonial government of New France in the 17th century . In 1905 Villeray merged with Montreal. The rapidly growing Parc Extension suburb, previously part of the Saint-Laurent district , also joined Montreal in 1910.

In 1912 the municipality of Saint-Michel-de-Laval was founded. Three years later, it received city status, which was associated with a renaming in Saint-Michel. The city developed into an industrial center. In the two decades after the Second World War alone, the population increased by more than ten times, from 6,000 to 68,000 inhabitants. The opening of Autoroute 40 made a particular contribution to this growth . Saint-Michel has also been part of Montreal since 1968.
