Marcus Vinícius da Cruz de Melo Moraes , or Vinícius de Moraes for short (born October 19, 1913 in Gávea , † July 9, 1980 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian poet , thinker, diplomat and singer.

Vinícius de Moraes wrote many works and poems , especially those in South America . In 1956 his play Orfeu da Conceição, written in 1954, was premiered with the music of Antônio Carlos Jobim , which served as a template for the film Orfeu Negro by Marcel Camus . De Moraes was also involved in the creation of the script.

De Moraes wrote the text for Baden Powell de Aquino's composition Berimbau and various bossa nova pieces by Antônio Carlos Jobim. Probably his best known work are the Portuguese lines of text to the classic Garota de Ipanema ( The Girl from Ipanema ).

Vinicius , the official mascot of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, was named after de Moraes.
