Vincenzo Giustiniani the Younger

Vincenzo Giustiniani the Younger (born September 13, 1564 in Chios , † December 27, 1637 in Rome ), called Marchese Giustiniani , nephew of Cardinal Vincenzo Giustiniani , was a Roman nobleman and art collector.

In 1566, when Chios passed from Genoese property to the Ottoman Empire , he came to Rome with his family, where he grew up. In 1606 his presence in Faenza is attested, where he is said to have assigned a picture to Dosso Dossi in the cathedral there . In the same year he went on a five-month trip via Germany to England and on the way back via France. His travel companion Bernardo Bizoni kept a diary about it.

He is portrayed as a man with diverse interests: from history and philosophy (especially stoicism ) to astrology and medicine to fortune telling. The directory of his library in the Palazzo Giustiniani in Rome contains almost 400 works. He had a particular admiration for the painter Caravaggio . In 1815, 70 of his paintings came to Berlin and were used to build the Altes Museum in 1830 (see: Giustiniani Collection ).

His commentary on his collection was published in 1981 by Anna Banti under the title Discorsi sulle arti e sui mestieri .
