Vincenzo Maria Altieri (born November 24, 1724 in Rome , † February 10, 1800 there ) was a Curia Cardinal of the Catholic Church .

Life

Altieri was appointed Apostolic Protonotary in 1743 and held this office from 1747. In the same year he also became prelate of the Council Congregation and speaker at the Apostolic Signature. After several years as a papal vice delegate in Urbino and Romagna, he became governor of Ancona in 1758. In 1764 he returned to the curia .

After Altieri became Prefect of the Papal House in 1776, Pope Pius VI created him . on June 23, 1777 in pectore to the cardinal , which was published on December 11, 1780. In the following years he was cardinal protector of numerous monasteries, churches and universities and took on leadership positions in several cardinal congregations . After three other titular diaconies , Cardinal Altieri was cardinal deacon of Santa Maria in Via Lata from 1794 .

On March 12, 1798, he took his leave of the cardinal office, which was accepted by the Pope on September 7 of the same year. His withdrawal had to do with the political situation and his poor health. During the vacancy after the death of Pius VI. On February 8, 1800, he asked Cardinal Dean Gian Francesco Albani to return to the College of Cardinals , which, however, became a lapsed request due to his own death two days later.

He was the nephew of the cardinals Lorenzo Altieri and Giovanni Battista Altieri . He was also the uncle of the Cardinals Alessandro Mattei and Lorenzo Girolamo Mattei .
