Vingelz ( French : Vigneules ) is the most populous district in the city of Biel / Bienne . It is a formerly independent municipality and was incorporated into Biel in 1900. Vingelz is the westernmost quarter of the city and borders in the north-east on the Rebberg quarter, in the north-west on Leubringen (Evilard) and in the south-west on Twann-Tüscherz and in the south-east on Lake Biel . The quarter stretches from the shores of Lake Biel over the Seefels to the slopes of the southern foot of the Jura .
history
The oldest known traces of settlement in the area of today's city of Biel are pile dwellings in the area of the port of Vingelz. The earliest finds were dated to 2970 BC. Dated. These finds are part of the prehistoric pile dwellings around the Alps , which were included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 .
Vingelz was first mentioned in 1181 as apud Wingelies . In the Middle Ages, Vingelz belonged to the Biel Meiertum, ecclesiastically and militarily it was under the city of Biel . In 1770 the settlement had 70 inhabitants, in 1850 127 inhabitants and in 1888 265 inhabitants. In 1900 the formerly independent municipality was incorporated into Biel .
