The Vincentian Congregation of Malabar ( Latin Congregatio Vincentiana , English Vinzentian Congregation , abbreviation : CV ) is a clerical society of apostolic life . It is a congregation of papal law within the Syro-Malabar Church and was founded in 1904 by Ludwig Pazheparambil .

The Apostolic Vicar of the Apostolic Vicariate Ernakulam Ludwig Pazheparambil developed the idea of ​​establishing a priestly community in his diocese on the basis of the Vincentine Mission of St. To build up Vincent de Paul . The congregation was organized on July 19, 1927, and founding members included Fathers Varkey Katterath, George Mannara, Antony Powathil, and George Vattamkandathil. They built their first religious house in the Thottakom Congregation ( Kerala , India ) and Father Katterath took over the leadership. Father Mannara was elected the first General Superior. With a decree of February 19, 1968, the religious community received the papal promise and was on September 27, 1971 by Pope Paul VI. approved .

Main focus of work and organization

The priestly community is based on the basic rules of the Vincentian Mission (Congregatio Missionis CM), which was published in 1625 by St. Vincent de Paul (1581-1660) was founded. Their main responsibilities include evangelization , the preaching of the gospel , holding retreats and seminars, and helping the poor.

The local focus of their activities is India and extends to the archbishoprics and dioceses of the Syro-Malabar Church. This also includes the branches in East Africa , the USA , Canada, England, Germany and Italy.

Under canon law, the religious order is subject to the jurisdiction of the Congregation for the Oriental Churches . The General House of the Vincentines of Malabar is located in Edappally . In total, the priestly community (as of December 2005) has 90 houses and 584 members of the order, 354 of whom belong to the priesthood. Since May 21, 2009, the Indian Father Varghese Parappuram has served as Superior General .

The religious community currently has a bishop , Bishop of Satna Matthew Vaniakizhakel CV. In addition, his predecessor Abraham D. Mattam, who died in 2019, was a member of the congregation.
