Vitalis Maier

Vitalis Maier OSB (born March 27, 1912 in Kirchberg an der Iller , † April 24, 1986 in Munich ) was the 63rd abbot of the Ottobeuren monastery .

Life

Abbot Vitalis was born as Josef Maier in Nordhofen, a district of Kirchberg an der Iller. After studying theology, he was elected abbot of the Ottobeuren Benedictine monastery on May 9, 1948. Abbot Vitalis made an outstanding contribution to the structural preservation of the monastery. For this purpose and also with a view to the 1200th anniversary of the abbey in 1961, he founded the Association of Friends of the Benedictine Abbey Ottobeuren eV
