Vittorino Veronese

Vittorino Veronese (born March 1, 1910 in Vicenza , Italy ; † September 3, 1986 in Rome ) was Director General of UNESCO from December 5, 1958 to November 2, 1961 .

biography

As an anti-fascist lawyer, publicist, university professor and father of seven children, Veronese became interested in social issues and upbringing and their international dimension very early on. After the end of fascism he was appointed to high positions in the Italian banking sector and worked as general secretary and president of the Azione cattolica (1944–1952).

Veronese had achieved great prestige in the political and cultural life of Italy and was a candidate of the forces seeking balance and compromise. His art of negotiation and his ability to rhetorically harmonize disagreements were known .

From 1952 to 1956 he represented his country on the UNESCO Executive Council , which he chaired until 1958.
