Vladimír Groh ( January 26, 1895 in Holešov - September 30, 1941 in Brno ) was a Czech classical philologist and historian . He was professor of ancient history at Masaryk University in Brno and also temporarily held an extraordinary professorship at Comenius University in Bratislava . From 1936 to 1937 he was dean of the philosophy faculty at Masaryk University. Vladimír Groh was a resistance fighter and belonged to the organization Obrana národa (Defense of the Nation). In 1941 he was arrested and executed for this.

Life

Vladimír Groh was the son of Karel Groh and Jitka Grohová. After attending grammar school in Brno (1905–1913), he studied Classical Philology at the Charles University in Prague (1913–1919) and then at the University of Rome (1919–1920). He received his doctorate on October 9, 1918 at Charles University in Prague and completed his habilitation there on March 25, 1921. 1918–1926 Groh was a professor at a girls 'high school in Prague, at the state high school in Prague and finally again at a girls' high school in Prague.

On July 10, 1920 he married Marie Roubalová, the couple had a son, Vladimír.

In March 1926 he was appointed professor of ancient history at Masaryk University in Brno, and from 1934 to 1939 he also taught as an associate professor at Comenius University in Bratislava. From 1936 to 1937 he was dean of the Philosophical Faculty of Masaryk University. His focal points included the history of ancient Rome and Roman historiography (the work of Titus Livius ).

Vladimír Groh was a member of the Royal Bohemian Society of Sciences (Královská česká společnost nauk), the Matice Moravská Association and a member of the Czechoslovak gymnastics movement Sokol as well as an honorary member of the Associazione Romana di Archeologia. After the German occupation of Czechoslovakia , Groh joined the resistance group Obrana národa . He was arrested for this on February 6, 1941 and sentenced to death on September 30, 1941 before a court martial for disturbing public safety and order and preparing for high treason . Vladimír Groh was koleje the same day in Kounicovy, a building that was originally a dormitory and since 1940 as a Gestapo - prison and execution site served executed. He was cremated and there is a cenotaph for him in the local cemetery in his hometown .

Memorials

There are memorial plaques for him on the Michna Palace in Prague, on the house where he was born in Holešov and on the building of the Philosophical Faculty. He is also remembered on a plaque in the building of Sokol Brno I. Furthermore, on September 25, 1946, a street in Brno was named after him (Grohova ul.).
