Volavérunt is a Spanish - French film drama from 1999. It was directed by Bigas Luna , who also wrote the screenplay with Cuca Canals based on a novel by Antonio Larreta .
action
The action takes place at the court of the Spanish King Charles IV at the beginning of the 19th century . The Duchess of Alba befriends the painter Francisco de Goya as well as the politician Manuel de Godoy , who, however, prefers the company of Pepita Tudó . Godoy wants Goya to make a picture of Pepita Tudó and hopes to have an affair with the woman.
Queen Maria Luise of Bourbon-Parma urges Godoy to marry the Countess María Teresa de Borbón y Vallabriga , the Countess of Chinchón . The Duchess of Alba dies after a feast, whereupon rumors spread around the court that some personalities are accused of murder. Suspects include the Queen, Godoy's wife, and his brother-in-law. In the end it turns out that the brother-in-law Willibald committed the murder in order to accept what he believed to be the righteous succession to the throne. The possibility of poison suicide is also considered. The painter creates a picture of Tudó as well as the Duchess.
Reviews
David Rooney wrote in Variety magazine on Sept. 27, 1999 that the "erotic costume drama" was "well-endowed" but "sleepy" . It looks rather thin for a literary film adaptation. Aitana Sánchez-Gijón overcomes the weaknesses of the dialogues and creates a “dreamy” and “passionate” figure. Penélope Cruz offers "intensity" and "determination" in her portrayal .
Awards
Aitana Sánchez-Gijón received the Silver Shell of the Festival Internacional de Cine de Donostia-San Sebastián in 1999 ; Bigas Luna was nominated for the Golden Shell at the same festival. Aitana Sánchez-Gijón and Jordi Mollà were nominated for the Spanish Fotogramas de Plata Prize in 2000. The film was nominated for the Goya 2000 in the categories of Best Cinematography , Best Equipment , Best Costumes and Best Mask .
backgrounds
The film was shot in Jerez de la Frontera and Madrid . Its production amounted to an estimated 8 million US dollars . The world premiere took place on October 1st, 1999 in Spain. On July 13, 2001, it was shown at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival .
