Volker Schmidt and Ellen Jonas
Volker Schmidt and Ellen Jonas are a German dance couple. The couple are three times world champions among amateurs and three times world champions among professionals, multiple winners of the German Open Championships (GOC), multiple German champions and multiple winners at the Blackpool Dance Festival . The couple started as amateurs for their home club Schwarz-Rot-Club Wetzlar .
history
Volker Schmidt (* 1967 in Herborn ) learned to dance in the Schwarz-Rot-Club Wetzlar, where his parents also celebrated great successes in the special class. Ellen Jonas (* 1968 in Dieburg ) grew up in Dieburg and did her first dance steps there. In January 1995 they began their joint career in the special class. The couple started from then on for the Schwarz-Rot-Club Wetzlar. On January 1, 2003, the couple switched to Seniors I (35 to 45 years old) and three years later to the professionals.
successes
The dance couple was very successful both in the main group and with the Seniors I and with the professionals nationally and internationally.
Main group
Their first major joint tournament in the main class was the German Open Championships (GOC) on August 25, 1995 in Mannheim. Here the couple took 76th place. A year later (August 31, 1996) they improved to 63rd place at the same tournament. The couple made it into the top ten at the Blue Ribbon of the Spree in Berlin on March 29, 1997. Their first appearance at the Blackpool Dance Festival on March 29, 1997 . May 1997 it finished in 52nd place.

Seniors I.
In Senior I, Ellen Jonas and Volker Schmidt won all 36 international tournaments they competed in and were first in the world rankings for many months. The couple won the first tournament in the senior I age group at the 2003 Celtic Classic in Ireland on February 21, 2003. In this class, the couple became world champions three times (2003-2005) in a row.

Professionals
The couple also continues to be very successful with professionals. On May 29, 2006, the professionals starting for Wetzlar competed in the new class for the first time. In the "Rising Stars" of the Blackpool Dance Festival 2006 they achieved 44th place. In 2014 Schmidt / Jonas became world champions of the World Dance Council (WDC) professionals in the age group over 40 years. In the Italian Cervia, the Wetzlarers won the standard dances in all five dances.
