The forward building is a building in the 5th district of Vienna Margareten , which was the seat of the Republican Protection Association , the party headquarters of the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP) and the Vorwärts publishing house .

Between 1907 and 1909, the forward building with its decorative clock on the facade was built at 97 Rechten Wienzeile according to plans by the brothers Franz and Hubert Gessner . The stone figures worker and worker on both sides of the clock were created in 1910 by the sculptor Anton Hanak . Among the houses that had to give way to the new building was the house where Hans Moser was born (Rechts Wienzeile 93). A memorial plaque was unveiled in his honor on June 18, 1965.

Before the First World War , Leon Trotsky , Nikolai Ivanovich Bukharin and Lenin visited Victor Adler in his office in the forward building. The Republican Protection Association officially had its seat here until it was banned in 1933. The headquarters of the SDAP, which was  occupied by the police on February 9, 1934 - shortly before the start of the February fighting - was also located here. This remained occupied until February 11th, on February 12th all social democratic organizations and publications were banned.

Furthermore, the printing works and the offices of the Vorwärts-Verlag were located here, which among other things produced the Arbeiter-Zeitung . In 1986 the publishing house moved to the 3rd district , Viehmarktgasse  4. After this move, with the exception of the main building, the outdated publishing house was demolished and a hotel was built in its place.

The Association for the History of the Labor Movement , the Johanna Dohnal Archive and the Bruno Kreisky Foundation are now located in the forward building .
