Vossem is a part of the former municipality of Gerderath and belongs to the city of Erkelenz . It is located in the Heinsberg district on the eastern edge of the Erkelenz Börde . The distance to the next larger town Wassenberg is approx. 5 km.

Vossem was first mentioned historically as Voishem in 1354. Documents with the name Voyssem exist from 1460 . The name is derived from the Central German word voss, vos (= fox).
